Why in News?
The Karlapat Bauxite Block is in the news because India's top industrial conglomerates—including Adani Enterprises, Reliance Industries, Hindalco, Vedanta Aluminium, Powercem, and Coal India—are aggressively competing in a high-stakes government auction to acquire it.
About Karlapat Bauxite Block
- Location: Situated in the Kalahandi district of Odisha, sitting within the mineral-dense Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt.
- Greenfield Status: It remains a completely untouched ("virgin") greenfield block that has never been commercially mined.
- Estimated Reserves: Holds an estimated 207 to 220 million tonnes of high-grade bauxite, making it one of the largest unallotted deposits in the country.
- Dimensions: Spans a massive plateau area of about 9.6 square kilometers (over 3,100 hectares) with a thick ore bed averaging 12 to 15 metres.
- High Quality Ore: Records an exceptionally high alumina content of roughly 45.2% to 47% (primarily gibbsitic mineralogy) coupled with low silica content, allowing for highly efficient extraction via the low-temperature Bayer process.
- Past Legal Hurdles: The Odisha High Court previously halted an auction of this exact block in 2021 due to deep-seated concerns regarding forest degradation, local water streams, and wildlife habitats.
