JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams

Why in News?
  • The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is launching the JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams initiative to significantly boost youth-led community mobilisation in India's fight to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) on October 8, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
  • High-Level Leadership: The national launch is being led by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, alongside Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Defence Shri Sanjay Seth, and Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta.
Composition of the Teams
The squads are designed to blend administrative leadership with vast youth outreach networks:
  • Class-I Officers: Providing administrative guidance and institutional support.
  • MY Bharat Volunteers: Leveraging the country's prominent youth volunteer platform.
  • NCC Cadets: Utilizing the discipline and extensive network of the National Cadet Corps.
Multi-Ministerial Approach
The project models a "whole-of-government" and "whole-of-society" approach through the convergence of three ministries:
  • Ministry of Health & Family Welfare: Provides the overarching public health infrastructure and TB elimination framework.
  • Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports: Facilitates the deployment and participation of MY Bharat volunteers.
  • Ministry of Defence: Enables the active participation of NCC cadets in local outreach.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Primary Objective: To take the message of TB Mukt Bharat (TB-Free India) directly to the grassroots, utilizing youth energy to drive community participation and social mobilization.
  • Grassroots Awareness: Disseminating vital information on TB symptoms, prevention, timely diagnosis, and adherence to complete medical treatment.
  • Social De-stigmatization: Confronting deep-rooted myths, misconceptions, and social stigmas surrounding TB to encourage people to seek medical help openly.
  • Targeted Focus Areas: Directing efforts at the Block, Ward, and community levels to move the TB campaign out of hospital facilities and into places where citizens live, work, and interact.
  • Jan Bhagidari (People's Participation): Building on the milestone achieved in 2025, where 67,933 Panchayats across 697 districts were recognized as "TB Mukt".
  • Khushi Avatar: Alongside the JOSH teams, the government is introducing Khushi Avatar, an AI-powered chatbot explicitly designed to strengthen interactive public awareness and guide communities in the national TB elimination movement.
