Indian Star Tortoise

Why in News?
On 23 August 2026, 216 Indian Star Tortoises rescued from wildlife-trafficking and illegal-possession cases in Mumbai and Thane were repatriated to the Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), Maharashtra.

Physical Characteristics
  • Unique Carapace: The black or obsidian upper shell features striking sun-yellow lines radiating outwards like stars, providing perfect natural camouflage.
  • Size Dimorphism: They grow up to 10 inches long, with females being significantly larger than males.
  • Activity Pattern: They are crepuscular, meaning they are primarily active during early mornings and late afternoons.
  • Lifespan: They live a long life spanning 35 to 80 years in their natural wild habitats.
Habitat & Distribution
  • Geographical Range: Endemic to the Indian subcontinent, specifically residing in parts of northwestern India, South India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
  • Indian States: Commonly distributed across dry zones of Odisha, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Punjab.
  • Ecosystem Choice: They prefer arid grasslands, semi-arid scrub forests, deciduous pockets, and rocky savannas.
Conservation & Protection Status
  • IUCN Red List: Classified as Vulnerable due to a steadily declining wild population.
  • CITES Status: Listed under Appendix I since 2019, which bans all forms of international commercial trade.
  • Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972: Upgraded to Schedule I in India, granting it the highest level of legal protection with severe penal sentences for violators.
Primary Threats
  • Illegal Pet Trade: According to the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), 90% of the trade occurs for the global exotic pet market.
  • Superstition & Medicine: They are frequently smuggled into Southeast Asia and East Asia due to beliefs that they bring good luck or possess traditional medicinal values.
  • Habitat Fragmentation: Rapid urbanization and changing agricultural practices are wiping out their specific arid grassland habitats.
  • Unscientific Release: Releasing seized animals without genetic matching causes cross-hybridization, diminishing local evolutionary adaptations.
