INDIAN AIR FORCE DRONATHON – 2026
Why in News?
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially launched its first-ever Dronathon-2026, a major three-day operational exercise dedicated to testing and evaluating next-generation Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-UAS (CUAS) technologies.
Event Overview
- Location & Timeline: The exercise is taking place at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, from September 14 to 16, 2026.
- Participants: More than 20 Indian defence companies, deep-tech start-ups, MSMEs, and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) are actively participating.
- Exhibition Format: The event features both static displays for technological review and live operational demonstrations to evaluate combat readiness.
Core Technology Focus Areas
- Surveillance & Reconnaissance: Testing expendable intelligence-gathering platforms and high-resolution mapping systems.
- Swarm & Autonomous Operations: Evaluating coordinate drone swarms and systems utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for autonomous navigation without GPS.
- Loitering Munitions: Reviewing indigenous "kamikaze" precision-strike drones.
- Electronic Warfare (EW) & Countermeasures: Testing drone-based jamming capabilities and counter-drone systems designed to neutralize rogue threats.
Strategic Importance & 'Atmanirbharta'
- Full-Ecosystem Development: In line with the Press Information Bureau, the push for self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) spans the entire drone supply chain—including indigenous airframes, propulsion systems, sensors, payloads, and communications.
- Bridging the Military-Industry Gap: It allows innovators to identify practical capability gaps and refine civilian drone variants for critical infrastructure protection, disaster management, and public safety.
- Youth Engagement: Local students and youth have been invited to view the live demonstrations to inspire interest in aerospace and deep-tech defence manufacturing.
