India’s first dedicated Quantum, AI university
Why in News?
- The Andhra Pradesh state government has officially approved the establishment of India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence (AI) University campus in Amaravati.
- The decision was formally greenlit during a Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Location & Infrastructure
- Permanent Location: An 8.5-acre campus will be constructed in the state's capital, Amaravati.
- Temporary Facility: Initial classes will start at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur while the permanent campus is being built.
- Eco-Friendly Design: The final campus will feature a solar-powered Net Zero facility equipped with smart classrooms, laboratories, and a 500-bed residential complex.
Execution & Institutional Framework
- Implementing Body: The university is being set up by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), which holds a Deemed-to-be University status.
- Regional Collaborations: NIELIT plans to partner with premiere regional institutions like IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University, and JNTU to co-develop academic programmes.
- National Alignment: The hub directly advances central mandates, specifically the National Quantum Mission, the IndiaAI Mission, and the India Semiconductor Mission.
Academic & Training Programs
- Diverse Matrix: The varsity will offer undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), doctoral (PhD), diploma, and executive certification tracks.
- Target Audience: The pipeline plans to train 8,250 learners over five years (1,650 through formal degrees and 6,600 via professional certifications).
- Core Specialisations:
- Quantum Computing, Communication, & Security
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
- Data Science & High-Performance Computing
- Semiconductor Fabrication, VLSI, and Chip Design
Innovation Hub & Industry Transition
- Dedicated Block: A massive 1.25 lakh sq. ft. Quantum Research, Innovation, and Incubation Block (QRIIB) will serve as the core of the campus.
- Tech Ecosystem: The QRIIB will house cutting-edge facilities including quantum photonics labs, data centres, cryogenic systems, and nano-fabrication cleanrooms.
- Commercial Pitch: The facility's primary mandate is to shorten the gap between theoretical research papers and commercial market products by hosting start-up co-working spaces and accelerating technology transfers.
