On 13 August 2026, India Optel Limited (IOL), a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence PSU, launched the indigenous ‘GARUD’ High Resolution Binoculars for the civilian market. The product was developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, an IOL unit.
The launch represents the transfer of defence-grade optical technology to civilian applications, supporting the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective.
Key Features
Magnification: GARUD provides 8× magnification, enabling observation of distant objects while maintaining a broad field of view.
Field of View: It offers a wide 7.6-degree field of view, useful for tracking moving objects and panoramic observation.
Diopter Adjustment:±5 diopter adjustment allows users with different eyesight requirements to obtain a clear image.
Design: It incorporates soft-touch eyecups, ergonomic grip and weather-resistant construction for comfortable outdoor use.
Weight: Approximately 610 grams, making it relatively portable for field applications.
Development & Applications
GARUD draws upon an optical platform that has previously served the Indian Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in demanding operational environments.
Its civilian applications include birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature exploration, tourism, sports, forestry, marine activities and security-related uses.
The initiative also demonstrates how India's established defence optical-manufacturing capabilities can be utilised for wider civilian markets.
Strategic Significance
Defence–Civilian Technology Transfer: Converts technologies developed for defence requirements into products accessible to civilian users.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Strengthens domestic capability in precision optics and reduces dependence on imported optical equipment.
Industrial Ecosystem: Can support development of domestic capabilities in optics, precision engineering and advanced manufacturing.
Export Potential: Building globally competitive optical products can create opportunities in international civilian and security markets.
