GAGAN-aerospace and indigenous navigation capabilities
Why in News?
GAGAN (GPS-Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is India's homegrown Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS), developed jointly by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Features & Capabilities
- Signal Augmentation: GAGAN does not replace GPS; instead, it enhances the accuracy, integrity, and safety of existing GPS navigation signals.
- Precision Accuracy: It improves GPS position accuracy down to 1 to 3 meters, which is critical for precision landing approaches.
- Real-time Integrity Alerts: The system instantly alerts pilots if a GPS signal becomes corrupted or unsuitable for navigation, ensuring top-tier aviation safety.
- Equatorial Certification: GAGAN is the world's first SBAS certified for the equatorial region, navigating unique atmospheric and ionospheric disturbances.
Infrastructure & System Architecture
- Space Component: Operates using specialized GAGAN payloads integrated into India's GSAT-8, GSAT-10, and GSAT-15 geostationary satellites.
- Ground Segment: Supported by a robust network including 15 Indian Reference Stations (INRES), 2 Indian Master Control Centres (INMCC), and 3 Indian Land Uplink Stations (INLUS).
- Global Interoperability: It is designed to work seamlessly with other global augmentation networks like the US (WAAS), Europe (EGNOS), and Japan (MSAS).
GAGAN vs. NavIC
- GAGAN: An augmentation system designed primarily to refine GPS data for precision aviation navigation and landings.
- NavIC: India’s independent regional satellite navigation system (standalone GPS equivalent) providing direct positioning, timing, and navigation services over India and 1,500 km beyond its borders.
Strategic & Cross-Sector Applications
- Aviation Safety: Provides both lateral and vertical guidance to aircraft. This allows smaller, remote airports to manage safe all-weather landings without installing expensive ground-based Instrument Landing Systems (ILS).
- Maritime Navigation: Ensures pinpoint positioning for ships across coastal and offshore waters.
- Rail & Road Transport: Aids in tracking train positions, operational safety, and implementing high-efficiency fleet management systems.
- Disaster Management: Delivers highly accurate location tracking to coordinate rapid relief operations during natural disasters.
- Other Sectors: Supports precision agriculture, defence navigation, surveying, and telecommunications synchronization.
