Fitzroy River
Why in News?
The Fitzroy River is in the news because it has officially been approved by World Rowing, Paddle Worldwide, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the rowing, para-rowing, canoe sprint, and para-canoe events for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Geography & Course
- Location: It is a major river located in Queensland, Australia, winding through towns, farmland, and natural landscapes.
- Origin: The river is formed by the confluence of the Dawson and Mackenzie rivers on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range.
- Length and Mouth: It flows for 480 kilometres (300 miles) before emptying into Keppel Bay of the Coral Sea (Pacific Ocean).
- Catchment Size: Along with its main tributary, the Margaret River, its catchment basin spans a massive 142,000 square kilometres, making it one of the largest river systems in Australia.
- Major Hub: The primary city situated along the river is Rockhampton, a major regional and agricultural hub known as Australia’s cattle capital.
- Naming: The river was named in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy, who served as the Governor of New South Wales between 1846 and 1855.
- Navigability: It is historically and commercially navigable for about 56 kilometres upstream from Port Alma at its mouth up to the city of Rockhampton.
Ecology & Wildlife
- Apex Predators: The river has a crocodile density of roughly 0.2 crocodiles per kilometre, mostly concentrated in its tidal lower reaches.
- Rich Aquatic Life: The Fitzroy basin hosts the most diverse range of freshwater fish in Australia, famously acting as a breeding ground for the prized Barramundi, as well as sooty grunter and golden perch.
- Rare Marine Mammals: A genetically distinct population of about 70 Australian snubfin dolphins resides right at the mouth of the river.
- Avian Sanctuary: Over 987 square kilometres of the river's delta and floodplain are classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, supporting species like the sharp-tailed sandpiper and the range-restricted mangrove honeyeater.
