Why in News?
On March 17, 2026, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) officially launched an anti-dumping investigation into imports of Ethyl Chloroformate from China.
Chemical Identity
- It is a colourless to yellowish liquid with a highly pungent and offensive odour.
- It is highly flammable and reacts violently with water (hydrolysis).
Primary Uses
- Pharmaceuticals: Used as a key reagent to activate carboxylic acids and produce intermediates for drugs, including antiviral and anticancer medications.

- Organic Synthesis: Facilitates the creation of carbamates, mixed anhydrides, and protecting groups like Ethoxycarbonyl (Cbz).

- Exposure Effects: Can cause severe irritation or burns to skin and eyes; inhalation can lead to pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs), which is a medical emergency.
- Environmental Impact: It is listed on hazardous substance lists by major agencies like the EPA and NFPA due to its corrosive and flammable nature.

- The global market was valued at approximately USD 480–500 million in 2025 and is projected to grow as demand for advanced pharmaceuticals and high-performance polymers increases.
