Endoscopic Camera

Why in News?
A college professor and five students in Chhattisgarh, was arrested for allegedly using a miniature endoscopy camera to leak a sealed university examination paper.

Core Technology
  • Definition: A device used to view, capture, and record real-time images or videos from narrow, deep, and hard-to-reach cavities with minimal visibility.
  • "Chip-on-Tip" Tech: Modern variations utilize integrated micro-lenses and digital imaging electronics grouped directly at the tip of the insertion probe.
  • Illumination: The anatomical or physical workspace is illuminated using micro-LED lights or fiber optics built right into the tip.
  • Signal Transmission: Visual data is instantly sent from the sensor via thin electrical cables to a external video processor or an HD medical monitor.
Medical Applications
  • Gastroscope: Used to examine the upper digestive tract, food pipe, and stomach.
  • Laparoscope: Inserted via tiny incisions to perform abdominal or pelvic surgeries.
  • Cystoscope / Arthroscope: Specialized versions used to look inside the urinary tract and joint spaces respectively.
  • Capsule Endoscopy: A non-invasive method where patients swallow a tiny camera encased in a pill to map the small intestine.
Non-Medical Uses
  • Industrial Inspection: Often called borescopes, they are deployed to check inside pipes, engine cylinders, and turbines.
  • Security & Law Enforcement: Used by tactical teams to look under doors, inside packages, or behind walls.
  • Integration of AI: Modern versions feature Artificial Intelligence image processing to automatically highlight structural anomalies and tissue lesions in real-time.
  • 4K & 3D Imaging: Advanced platforms (like those developed by Olympus and Fujifilm) provide depth perception and high-definition resolution for intricate surgeries.
