Why in News?
Researchers from the Palampur-based CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Himachal Pradesh, identified and described the new species from Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh.
Identification & Taxonomy
- Family: It belongs to the Asteraceae family, which is widely known as the sunflower family.
- Genus: Doronicum L. (Leopard’s bane).
- Scientific Name: Doronicum sanctum Vik. Kumar & Rahul Kumar.
- Origin of Name: The specific epithet "sanctum" (Latin for holy or sacred) was chosen because the plant was found near the Chumi Gyatse Holy Waterfalls, a highly revered spiritual site for the local community.
Physical Characteristics
- Vibrant Appearance: The plant features vibrant yellow, daisy-like flowers resting above distinct heart-shaped green leaves.
- Unique Flower Stalks: It possesses noticeably dilated flower stalks (peduncle apex) that cup the flower head.
- Distinct Bracts: It is guarded by flat, lance-shaped green bracts (phyllaries) that physically distinguish it from its closest relatives.
- Seed Features: It is defined by its pubescent ray cypselae (tiny, hairy seeds located at the edge of the flower head) and a caducous pappus (a feathery structure that detaches easily).
Conservation Status & Ecological Concerns
- Closest Relatives: Morphologically, it is most closely related to two Chinese species: Doronicum conaense and Doronicum stenoglossum.
- Botanical Separation: While it shares a similar inflorescence structure with its Chinese counterparts, it uniquely differs in the specific shape of its ray florets and the hairiness of its marginal seeds.
- Extreme Rarity: During the botanical survey, researchers observed an exceptionally small population of just 10 to 12 individual plants at the site.
- Conservation Tag: Due to the scarce data on its wider distribution, it has been given a provisional conservation status of Data Deficient (DD).
- Ecological Value: Scientists note that this discovery highlights the massive, undocumented biological wealth of the Eastern Himalayas and stresses the urgent need for habitat protection in sensitive border ecosystems.
