CosmoCube Mission

Why in News?
An international team of scientists led by the University of Cambridge has unveiled CosmoCube, a proposed suitcase-sized satellite mission designed to study the universe's earliest stages from lunar orbit.

Objective & Target
  • The Cosmic Dark Ages: Aims to observe the 150-million-year period after the Big Bang but before the first stars ignited.
  • The Target Signal: Designed to detect the 21-centimetre hydrogen line, a faint low-frequency radio signal emitted by early neutral hydrogen atoms.
  • Timeline of Signal: The target signals originate from more than 13.5 billion years ago.
Mission Design & Specifications
  • Compact Size: Built as a miniature, suitcase-sized satellite.
  • Development Lead: Headed by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
  • Launch Timeline: Projected to be ready for launch within the next five years.
  • Mission Life: Planned to operate for a total duration of two years.
Working Mechanism & Lunar Shield
  • Earth Obstacles: Low-frequency space signals are blocked by Earth's ionosphere and drowned out by FM radio, satellites, and telecommunications.
  • The Lunar Shield: The satellite will orbit the Moon, using the lunar far side as a natural physical shield against Earth's radio frequency interference (RFI).
  • Observation Windows: Will spend 40 minutes behind the dark side during every two-hour orbit to collect completely pristine data.
  • Data Harvest: Aims to collect roughly 1,000 hours of low-frequency radio data over its lifespan.
  • Onboard Smart Systems: Uses a lightweight antenna and advanced mathematical models to filter out noise from the spacecraft itself and the Milky Way galaxy.
Scientific Significance
  • Unexplored Era: It will open up access to a completely hidden period of cosmic history, showing how the universe transitioned from dark and empty to star-filled.
  • Dark Matter Clues: The mapping could reveal how dark matter pulled early visible matter together to form the very first galaxies.
  • Exotic Physics: Data may reveal signs of brand-new, exotic physics driving the growth of structures in our early universe.
