The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is currently in the news as it officially commenced its 70th session (CSW70) on 9 March 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Establishment and Mandate
- Established in 1946 by UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution as its functional commission.
- Principal global body dedicated to gender equality and women's empowerment; documents women's conditions and sets standards.
- Mandate expanded in 1996 to monitor Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action implementation, plus gender mainstreaming in UN activities.β
