Why in News?
Ceratocaudia antigua is in the news because a team of Indian researchers successfully unearthed its partial skeleton in Gujarat, identifying it as a newly discovered dinosaur species.
Key Information
- Dinosaur Family: It belongs to the Macronaria clade, a major group of sauropod dinosaurs characterized by large nasal openings. This group later evolved into Earth’s largest land animals, like Brachiosaurus.
- Meaning of Name: The generic name Ceratocaudia blends Ancient Greek and Latin to mean "horned tail", referencing a distinct, horn-like crest found on its tail vertebrae. Antigua translates to "ancient".
- Diminutive Size: Unlike its giant relatives, it was a "dwarf taxon" or comparatively small, measuring roughly 7 metres (23 feet) in length.
- Weaponised Tail: Digital muscle modelling of its highly unique ball-and-socket tail joints indicates it could swing its tail with rapid, powerful side-to-side motions to efficiently deter predators.
- Fossil Completeness: The holotype consists of more than 181 bone fragments, featuring an almost complete tail, limb bones (thighbones and forearms), ribs, and back vertebrae.
- Ancient Environment: It lived roughly 170–180+ million years ago in a brackish, estuarine ecosystem (now the Kaladongar Formation) filled with petrified wood and ancient bivalves.
