On 14–15 August 2026, BSNL launched a revamped “BSNL Selfcare New” app (Android & iOS) as part of its 80th Independence Day digital initiatives.
The app is positioned as a unified platform for all BSNL services plus entertainment, including ~500 free live TV channels via “BSNL Free Entertainment TV” powered by Tango TV.
Background
BSNL’s earlier Selfcare app allowed basic recharges, bill payments, and complaint tracking for mobile, landline, and FTTH.
With BSNL’s push for 4G/5G rollout, FTTH expansion, and customer experience improvement, the app has been redesigned to be faster, smarter, and more integrated.
Key Features
Unified services: Prepaid recharges; postpaid/landline/FTTH bill payments; plan upgrades; data usage tracking; complaint booking & tracking; FTTH new connection booking.
Payments & convenience: UPI, cards, net banking; multi-account management; plan expiry alerts; DND management; AI chatbot and voice search.
Entertainment: In-app access to BSNL Free Entertainment TV with ~500 live TV channels and on-demand content.
Multilingual: Available in 13 Indian languages (including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, etc.).
Significance
Improves digital service delivery of a key PSU telecom operator, aligning with Digital India and customer-centric governance.
Reduces dependence on physical offices/call centres for routine tasks, potentially lowering operational costs and improving service transparency.
Bundling entertainment with utility services can boost app adoption, especially among price-sensitive users.
Challenges
App performance & adoption: Past versions faced complaints about bugs, slow UI, and login issues; success depends on real-world stability and marketing.
Competition: Private telcos already offer mature apps with rich features; BSNL must ensure consistent UX and reliability to retain users.
Digital divide: Benefits may skew toward urban, smartphone-literate users; rural/elderly users may still need offline support.
