Bio-floc Technology

Why in News?
The Government of India is heavily promoting Biofloc Technology (BFT) alongside Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

About Biofloc Technology
  • Biofloc Technology is an innovative, cost-effective, and eco-friendly aquaculture system that aggregates waste organic matter, toxic nitrogen, and beneficial microorganisms into floating clumps called "bioflocs".
  • The Symbiotic Loop: Fish or shrimp excreta normally pollutes the water. In a biofloc tank, specialized heterotrophic bacteria consume this toxic waste and convert it into a nutrient-rich microbial biomass.
  • Self-Feeding Mechanism: Once these bacteria clump together and grow large enough, they serve as a high-protein, secondary food source directly for the fish.
  • The Core Formula: The system works by artificially maintaining a high Carbon-to-Nitrogen (C: N) ratio (ideally 15:1). Farmers add cheap carbon sources like molasses or starch to fuel a rapid explosion of these waste-consuming bacteria.
Benefits of Biofloc
  • Drastic Water Savings: It operates on a zero or minimal water-exchange system. The water cleanses itself continuously, recycling up to 90–95% of the water volume.
  • Reduced Feed Costs: Because the fish continuously graze on the protein-rich microbial flocs, dependence on expensive external commercial feeds is reduced by up to 30%.
  • Ultra-High Yields: The highly controlled environment allows for a significantly higher stocking density of fish per unit area compared to traditional open ponds.
  • Enhanced Biosecurity: The beneficial probiotic bacteria outcompete harmful pathogens, naturally lowering the risk of disease without relying heavily on antibiotics.
  • Land Flexibility: It requires very little space. Tanks can even be set up in small backyards, non-arable lands, or urban hubs close to markets.
Major Challenges
  • Constant Power Demand: The system requires continuous, 24/7 mechanical aeration and mixing. If the power fails and the oxygen levels drop, the entire microbial ecosystem can crash rapidly, killing the stock.
  • High Startup Capital: Buying durable lined tanks, backup power generators, and efficient aeration grids demands a steep upfront setup investment.
  • Technical Management: It is highly sensitive. Farmers must meticulously monitor water parameters, sludge accumulation, and the active balance of the live microbial colony.
