Anak Krakatau volcano

Why in News?
Anak Krakatau has been erupting repeatedly since late Friday, 4 September 2026, with lava fountains, booming sounds, and ash plumes reaching up to ~50,000 ft (15 km).

Geographic & Physical Profile
  • Meaning: The name Anak Krakatau translates to "Child of Krakatoa" in Indonesian.
  • Location: It is a dynamic volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the major islands of Java and Sumatra (Indonesia).
  • Birth: The island first emerged from the sea in December 1927. It formed inside the massive underwater caldera left behind by its infamous mother volcano, Krakatoa.
  • Tectonic Setting: It sits directly on the highly volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, making it prone to frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
Historical Significance
  • The 1883 Cataclysm: Its predecessor, Krakatoa, was responsible for one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in recorded history in 1883. That explosion killed over 36,000 people, triggered immense tsunamis, and altered global climates for years.
  • The 2018 Flank Collapse: In December 2018, a severe eruption caused a massive underwater sector collapse of Anak Krakatau. This triggered the deadly Sunda Strait tsunami, killing more than 430 people.
  • Scientific Value: Because it is a relatively "young" and constantly evolving island, it serves as a crucial natural laboratory for global volcanologists and ecologists studying ecosystem development from scratch.
