Advanced High-Altitude Parachute

Why in News?
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the maiden live jump of the indigenously developed Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP) at Nyoma (Mudh Drop Zone) in Ladakh.

Core Purpose & System Type
  • Mass Drops: It is a static-line parachute system specifically engineered for the large-scale, mass dropping of paratroopers into combat zones.
  • Tactical Employability: It enables rapid, coordinated airborne deployments in highly challenging, mountainous borders.
Operational Capabilities
  • Altitude Range: The system operates across a wide envelope, with a maximum operational altitude range of up to 18,000 feet.
  • Optimised Descent: It features a highly controlled and safe rate of descent, custom-tailored to combat the thin air and complex aerodynamics of high-altitude terrains.
  • Deployment Versatility: The parachute is equipped with multiple deployment modes to adapt to varying aircraft speeds and mission requirements.
Development & Manufacturing Ecosystem
  • Design & Development: It was indigenously conceptualised and designed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra, a premier laboratory under the DRDO.
  • Production: The system is manufactured by the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF) in Kanpur.
  • Quality & Certification: The technology underwent strict quality checks by the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and received formal certification from the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) via RCMA Kanpur.
Strategic Significance
  • Overcoming High-Altitude Risks: Standard parachute jumps at these elevations face severe engineering challenges due to low air density, which typically causes excessive opening shocks and dangerously fast descent speeds. AHAP effectively minimises these risks.
  • Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Hailed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as a massive step toward self-reliance, this achievement significantly reduces India’s dependency on imported specialized military parachutes.
