Adi Vaani platform

Why in News?
The Adi Vaani platform is in the news because the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has announced a major update to the platform at a National Conclave in Mysuru, featuring its expansion to five new languages, a new iOS application, and the introduction of an AI chatbot.

Technology & Development
  • AI Architecture: Built using advanced AI open-source translation models like No Language Left Behind (NLLB) and IndicTrans2, specifically adapted for low-resource tribal languages.
  • Development Consortium: Led by IIT Delhi in collaboration with BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Nava Raipur, and various state Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs).
  • Extremely Cost-Effective: Developed as a highly optimized public innovation costing roughly one-tenth of commercial AI alternatives.
Language Coverage
  • Initial Languages: Supported real-time translation for Gondi (Chhattisgarh), Mundari (Jharkhand), Bhili (Madhya Pradesh), and Santali (Odisha).
  • Under-Development Base: Early scaling phases included Kui (Odisha) and Garo (Meghalaya).
  • Proposed Horizon: The project framework covers phased additions for languages like Katkari, Koya, Kokborok, Betta Kuruba, Thodou Kuki, Tangkhul, and Chodri.
Functional Toolkit & Core Features
  • Multi-Way Translation: Enables real-time text-to-text, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and speech-to-speech translation between Hindi, English, and indigenous languages.
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR): Scans and translates physical documents, old manuscripts, and primers to digitize endangered dialects.
  • Heritage Archiving: Digitally preserves oral traditions, folklore, indigenous stories, and community narratives contributed by native elders.
  • Interactive Learning: Integrates digital primers and NCERT-aligned modules to help younger generations learn their native languages.
Governance & Socio-Economic Impact
  • Inclusive Governance: Translates vital health advisories (e.g., Sickle Cell Disease awareness) and the Prime Minister’s speeches into tribal languages.
  • Scheme Awareness: Delivers easy-to-understand information on welfare policies directly to remote, offline-heavy community layers.
  • Strategic Alignment: Directly supports major government initiatives like Digital India, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, PM JANMAN, and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan.
