Why in News?
On September 26, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially approved AbbVie's new drug, which will be marketed under the brand name Juvmo, to treat Parkinson's disease symptoms.
About Juvmo (Parkinson's Disease Drug)
- Mechanism of Action: Juvmo works by mimicking dopamine, a vital brain chemical that naturally decreases in individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease, thereby improving movement control.
- Clinical Basis: The FDA approval was secured after successful late-stage clinical trials demonstrated a significant reduction in tremors, stiffness, and balance issues.
- Market Projections: Wall Street analysts expect a gradual commercial rollout through the third quarter of 2026 as insurance and Medicare coverage negotiations finalize. AbbVie aims for a combined $5 billion in Parkinson's disease drug sales.
- Side Effects: The most common adverse effects documented during the trial phase include nausea, headache, and dizziness.
Etentamig (Multiple Myeloma Cancer Therapy)
- Efficacy Rates: In its latest clinical trials, etentamig achieved an Objective Response Rate (ORR) of 74%—meaning the cancer shrunk or completely disappeared in nearly three-quarters of patients. This vastly outpaced the 45.7% response rate from standard healthcare treatments.
- Survival Metrics: The drug successfully reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 60%. At the 12-month milestone, 87.9% of patients treated with etentamig were alive, compared to only 72% in the standard care control group.
Future Pipeline & Tech Expansion
- Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs): AbbVie is focusing heavily on ADCs, which act like guided missiles by binding directly to cancer cell proteins to deliver cell-destroying drugs. Notable pipeline drugs include Emrelis (lung cancer) and pivekimab sunirine (rare blood cancer under FDA review).
- Acquisition Spree: To bolster its next-generation portfolio, AbbVie completed a $10.9 billion acquisition of Apogee Therapeutics for eczema treatments, alongside recent acquisitions of Aliada Therapeutics ($1.4B) and Gilgamesh Pharmaceuticals ($1.2B).
