Why in News?
The 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026 is in the news because India achieved a historic golden sweep, winning five gold medals and securing the joint World No. 1 rank.
Event Overview
- Every member of the five-student Indian contingent won a gold medal at the prestigious global tournament, putting India at the top spot alongside China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
- Host Location: The prestigious global science competition was held in the vibrant city of Bucaramanga, Colombia.
- Event Dates: The competition took place from 4 July to 12 July 2026.
- Massive Scale: A total of 381 students from 85–87 countries participated in the gruelling international competition.
- Nurturing Body: The Indian team's historic run was organized and supported by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), a national centre under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

The five exceptional Indian students who swept the top honours are:
- Kanishk Jain – Pune, Maharashtra
- Riddhesh Anant Bendale – Indore, Madhya Pradesh
- Rishit Garg – Dwarka, New Delhi
- Shresth Suraiya – Mumbai, Maharashtra
- Svarit Joshi – Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Special Individual Awards
- Overall Winner: The special prize for the best overall performance went to a student from South Korea.
- Best Experimentalist: The award for the highest score in the experimental components went to a student from Iran.
- Rigorous Testing: Students faced an intense 5-hour theoretical examination alongside experimental challenges.
- Advanced Topics: Problems pushed high-school physics limits, featuring concepts like the thermodynamics of paramagnetic cooling, photoionization of ozone, light reflection behaviours (caustics and cusps), and electron-positron pair dynamics.
