Split Wide Open: On the AIADMK and Tamil Nadu Politics
The recent internal turmoil within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has once again exposed the fragility of post-Jayalalithaa Dravidian politics in Tamil Nadu. What began as dissatisfaction after the 2026 Assembly election setback has now evolved into an open leadership struggle within the party. The rebellion led by senior leaders such as S.P. Velumani and C.V. Shanmugam against the leadership of Edappadi K. Palaniswami indicates that the AIADMK is facing one of the deepest crises in its history.
The developments are politically significant because the AIADMK has historically been one of the two pillars of Tamil Nadu’s bipolar Dravidian political system, alongside the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Any fragmentation within the AIADMK alters not only opposition politics but also the future balance of power in the State.

Background of the Crisis
The roots of the current crisis lie in the death of J. Jayalalithaa in 2016. Her demise created a leadership vacuum that the party has never fully overcome. Since then, multiple factions emerged around leaders such as O. Panneerselvam, V. K. Sasikala, T. T. V. Dhinakaran, and EPS.
Though EPS eventually consolidated formal control over the party structure and the “Two Leaves” symbol, ideological cohesion and cadre unity remained weak. The 2026 Assembly election intensified these contradictions. AIADMK’s poor performance triggered resentment among leaders who questioned EPS’s strategy, alliance choices, and leadership style.
The latest trigger came when a faction of AIADMK MLAs reportedly backed S.P. Velumani as legislature party leader and extended support to the new Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by C. Joseph Vijay.

Why the Split Matters
1. End of Centralised Leadership
AIADMK functioned effectively under charismatic centralised leaders such as M. G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa. After Jayalalithaa, no leader has commanded statewide emotional legitimacy. The repeated factional fights demonstrate the absence of a universally accepted successor.
2. Weakening of Dravidian Bipolarity
Tamil Nadu politics traditionally revolved around DMK versus AIADMK. The emergence of TVK under Vijay and the fragmentation of AIADMK signal the weakening of this decades-old bipolar order.
3. Space for New Political Forces
The AIADMK crisis has opened political space for:
  • TVK led by Vijay
  • BJP seeking independent expansion
  • Smaller caste-based and regional parties
This could transform Tamil Nadu from a stable two-party competition into a fragmented multipolar system.
4. Impact on NDA Politics
The AIADMK has been a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu. Internal divisions weaken the NDA’s electoral arithmetic in the State and complicate BJP’s southern expansion strategy.

Key Political Dimensions
Leadership Legitimacy
EPS retains organisational control, but dissident leaders claim that the leadership failed to revive the party electorally. Questions are now being raised over whether the party requires collective leadership or reunification with expelled factions.
Ideological Drift
The AIADMK once represented a welfare-oriented Dravidian alternative rooted in populism and Tamil identity. In recent years, critics argue that the party lost ideological clarity and became excessively dependent on alliances and personality politics.
Role of Personality Politics
Tamil Nadu politics has historically depended on charismatic personalities. Vijay’s rapid rise shows that cinema-linked political mobilisation still remains influential in the State.
Anti-Defection and Constitutional Questions
If legislators formally split or cross-vote, issues relating to the anti-defection law under the Tenth Schedule may arise. The Speaker’s role could become crucial in determining the validity of factional claims.

Implications for Tamil Nadu Politics
Dimension Likely Impact
Opposition Politics AIADMK may lose status as principal opposition
Governance TVK government may gain stability through outside support
BJP Strategy BJP may attempt independent consolidation
Dravidian Politics Shift from binary to competitive multipolar politics
Electoral Behaviour Younger voters may move toward alternative parties

Challenges Before AIADMK
  1. Restoring cadre unity
  2. Resolving leadership disputes
  3. Rebuilding ideological identity
  4. Countering the rise of TVK
  5. Preventing erosion of vote banks
  6. Managing relations with BJP and other allies
The Larger Democratic Lesson
The AIADMK crisis reflects a broader structural issue in Indian regional parties: excessive dependence on charismatic leadership without institutional succession mechanisms. Parties built around personalities often struggle after the departure of dominant leaders.
It also highlights the changing nature of regional politics in India, where:
  • cinema personalities continue to wield influence,
  • coalition politics remains fluid,
  • and voters increasingly seek alternative political narratives.
Conclusion
The current split within the AIADMK is not merely an internal organisational dispute; it marks a critical transition in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The weakening of one pole of Dravidian politics has created uncertainty but also opened possibilities for political realignment. Whether AIADMK reinvents itself or continues to fragment will determine the future trajectory of opposition politics in Tamil Nadu. At stake is not only the survival of a major regional party, but also the stability of the State’s long-standing Dravidian political order.
